Why Leadership Advice Hasn’t Evolved in Decades and What’s Missing

“Most of us are weary of hearing yet another list of essential traits, behaviors, and tasks for effective leadership.”
— Dr. Roy Hinton, Associate Dean, George Mason University

I read those words from Dr. Hinton over a decade ago in the Foreword to 9 Lenses Insight to Action by renowned turnaround CEO Edwin Miller.

Since then, our social media and business press have flooded us with literally millions more of these lists. At the same time, leadership challenges persist.

Why? Because these lists address symptoms, not the root cause. They offer us band-aids when what we need is deep, transformative change.

It’s not that these lists are wrong; it’s that they only address the outer behaviors of leadership.

They provide a map for what leaders do, but they rarely address who leaders are and how you can embody these traits.

Without this deeper inquiry, leadership advice stays surface-level. It leaves us with behaviors that can be practiced without changing the core state of the person practicing them.

These lists often miss the inner side of leadership. It’s not about doing, but about being.

Great leadership requires more than good intentions and behaviors. It requires mastering oneself.

My inner leader journey over the past 15 years has taught me that leadership is the echo of our inner truth and soul in the world. And it isn’t just about leading others. It’s about reinventing ourselves to lead the future.

To truly grow as leaders, we must venture into the “Space Beyond Boundaries.” In this open space, we can reprogram our minds and free ourselves to explore new possibilities and perspectives.

True leadership requires more than just skills or traits. It demands a deep sense of awareness and authenticity. When leaders operate from this space, they naturally inspire and elevate those around them.

Effective leadership requires more than new behaviors. It demands a journey of self-discovery and liberation from our conditioning.

It’s time for leaders to go beyond surface-level advice and dive deep into the work of inner transformation.

What does your highest self already know about the leadership transformation you’re meant to undergo?

You're not alone. In my 15-year inner leader journey, I've come to a startling realization. The conventional wisdom of defining our 'why' and identifying our strengths may be holding us back from our true potential. Experts have told us for years that finding our...

California Dreamin’ A new world beyond leadership as we know it today. Hello Reader, I remember growing up and spending summer vacation mornings at my best friend Pete’s house. We’d crank up his stereo and listen to The Beach Boys at full blast. Their music seemed to tap into something deeper that we didn’t fully understand back then, but we all felt it. They weren’t just singing about California. They were creating a world where we could be our true selves—a place where living and playing...

The Profound Implications of the Medium of Leadership Hello Reader, I’ve been fascinated by the work of Marshall McLuhan, who famously said “the medium is the message,” ever since a colleague introduced me to his ideas several years ago. His exploration of media and technology was ahead of its time. Paradoxally, McLuhan helped us see how the tools we create ultimately shape us in return. Contrary to what most of us believe, McLuhan pointed out that the medium itself has a greater impact than...
